SKATING PROGRAM
INFORMATION
GROUP STARSKATE
We have implemented this new program to help with the transition from CanSkate to STARskate. Group STARskate offes opportunities to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of Ice Dance, Skating Skills, Freeskate, Interpretive Expression and Stroking. This is for skaters who have NOT passed any preliminary tests but have passed Stage 4 of the CanSkate program. This is a non-competitive program that will enhance the skills the skaters have mastered in the CanSkate program. Group STARskate also teaches the skaters discipline and gets them ready to enter into the private or semi-private sector. Lessons are provided in a group format. Group STARskate runs Tuesday, 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Wednesdays, 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
LEARNING TO SKATE
CANSKATE (Ages 5 yrs & up) is Canada's only national
learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages.
This is a program that focuses on fun, participation and basic
skill development. Participants earn badges and other
incentives as they learn fundamental skating skills.
Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP certified
professional coach. Professional coaches are assisted by
trained Program Assistants. The coach/program assistant to
student ratio is a maximum of 1:10. Skaters progress at
their own rate and coaches conduct sessions using teaching aids,
music and a variety of activities that create a fun environment
and promote learning. Sessions are 50 minutes in length
and include a large group warm-up and cool-down component.
CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada Skating
Programs.
PRE-CANSKATE
(Pre-Beginners) (Ages 3 to 5) is a 30 minute learn-to-skate
program, especially designed for those participants who are 3-5
years of age. Lessons are in a group format and led by an
NCCP certified professional coach with the assistance of trained
Program Assistants. The coach/program assistant to student
ratio is a maximum of 1:8.
Note: CSA approved hockey helmets are mandatory for
Pre-CanSkate and CanSkate (including Teens) stages 1 through 4.
STARSKATE
AFTER CANSKATE... THERE IS STARSKATE
STARSKATE is a Skate Canada program which offers skaters of all
ages the opportunity to develop fundamental figure skating
skills, such as stroking, spinning, jumping and ice dancing.
At VFSC, skaters progress through the StarSkate levels (Junior,
Intermediate and Senior) based on their successful completion of
the various levels of Skate Canada's nationally standardized
testing system. A skater may only be recommended for
testing by the coach. The minimum qualifications for each
STARSkate level are as of the beginning of each season and are
noted under each program description below.
JUNIOR STARSKATE is specifically
designed for those skaters just completing the CanSkate program.
The Junior Program moves skaters out of CanSkate, and into the
StarSkate program. In this program skaters move away from a
100% coach-directed program, into skating independence. Junior
level sessions may be combined with Intermediate level sessions.
The Junior session fee includes two (2) x 15 minute group
lessons. Both group lessons are conducted by a professional
skating coach. The balance of their session time is utilized
through a private lesson with their coach and/or working on
their skills independently. Minimum Qualification: Completion
of Canskate stage 6 or at the recommendation of one of the
Club's full-time NCCP Certified Coaches.
INTERMEDIATE STARSKATE continues
to progress the skater towards skating independence and private
coaching. Each Intermediate session fee includes one (1) x 15
minute group lesson. The balance of the session time is
utilized through a private lesson with their coach and working
on their skills independently. Skaters must have a private coach
at this level. Minimum Qualification: Passed one complete
preliminary test level in any one of FreeSkate, Skills or Dance
categories. At VFSC we have combined the intermediate & senior
programs under the title Senior program.
SENIOR STARSKATE requires skaters
to practice their skills and routines independently, with the
exception of the time spent in private lesson(s) with their
coach(s). Minimum Qualification: Passed 1/2 of Junior Bronze
Freeskate test (i.e. Elements or Program) AND, Passed Junior
Bronze Skills test AND Passed complete Junior Bronze Dance
test.
CANPOWER SKATE is only taught in
sanctioned Skate Canada clubs. This program stresses balance,
power, agility, speed endurance and conditioning for skaters.
Badges are earned as different levels are mastered. There are 6
levels in the CanPower Skate program from beginner to advanced.
Hockey skates & gear are required!

TEST DAY
GUIDELINES AND FEES
TEST DAYS
Skaters progress through the StarSkate levels (Junior,
Intermediate and Senior) based on their successful completion of
the various levels of Skate Canada's nationally standardized
testing system. A skater may only be recommended for
testing by their private coach.
2009/2010 TEST
GUIDELINES AND FEES
When your coach
decides that you are ready to try a test, they will submit your
name and the test(s) being tried to the Club Test Chair.
Skating tests are evaluated by a Skate Canada certified
evaluator (judge). At times, Test Days do run ahead of
schedule. It is best if you arrive 45 minutes ahead of
your posted test time to avoid missing your test.
When you arrive, check in with the Test Chair or designate.
You will need to provide payment for your test upon arrival.
This includes the posted fee per test tried, plus the
hospitality fee, which is used towards Test Day expenses.
Please note that Evaluators/Judges are volunteers who give
freely of their time with no monetary recompense. They are
provided only with their meals, mileage and babysitting costs.
It has been the practice of our club to give them a small token
of our appreciation.
A skater failing to show up on Test Day will be charged as if
the test was taken and will be listed as a "Retry" unless a
medical certificate is submitted to the Test Chair within three
days of the Test Day. Only those skaters in good standing
will be allowed to try tests.
